The solution is to start to put yourself first more often, to pay attention to how you feel moment by moment and do more of the things that make you light up. Ask yourself what would you like to do today and do those things at least once a day, even if it’s something as simple as a slow hot cup of coffee.
Also rephrase your words from “have to” to “want to”. You don’t want to go to work but you have to… If you don’t work, your bills will be unpaid, etc. so the only sensible solution is to go to work.
Therefore you want to go to work. A simple mind shift like that will wake you up to the fact that you do always have a choice.
If you want to go do something fun and creative with your time but you have a bunch of boring chores to do, hire help or even just ask for help. Reprioritize your life, so that at least once a day even just for a little while, the grown up in you shuts the F up and you unleash your inner child.
This is a practice, it’s a discipline and it takes perseverance. But it’s totally worth it because gradually your life will begin to transform from a bunch of shoulds and have to’s to something much more fun. How great would that be?!
